Breaking the Silence: A New Chapter for Mental Health at Kyadondo Technical Institute

On the afternoon of 24th March 2026, something quietly powerful happened at Kyadondo Technical Institute in Busabala. It wasn’t a concert or a political rally. There were no flashing lights or loud celebrations. Instead, it was something far more important,  a conversation many people are often too afraid to start: mental health.
Students, staff, and community members gathered, some curious, others carrying invisible burdens they had never shared. The event, organized by the Rotaract Club of Kyadondo Technical Institute (In Formation), became more than just an awareness campaign. it became a moment of truth, healing, and hope.

Led by the committed Club President, Ampumuza Monica, the Rotaractors set out with one goal:to remind everyone that it is okay not to be okay.
The day was enriched by the presence of dedicated mental health specialists. Dr. Akram Mukalazi, a medical doctor and researcher from IUIU, spoke with both professionalism and compassion, breaking down the science behind mental health in a way everyone could understand. He emphasized that mental health challenges are not a sign of weakness, but a human experience that deserves attention and care.
Alongside him was a team from *StrongMinds Uganda,* led by Mr. Moses Ssengoba, who shared real-life stories of recovery and resilience from communities across the country. His words struck a chord with many in the audience: “Healing begins the moment you realize you are not alone.”
What made the event even more impactful was its reach beyond the physical gathering. Through a live online broadcast, the message extended far beyond the institute, attracting over 1,000 viewers who followed the discussions, engaged with the speakers, and became part of the movement from different locations. This digital participation highlighted a growing awareness and urgency around mental health, proving that the conversation is needed everywhere.

Behind the strength of this young and promising club stands a pillar of unwavering support from the Rotary Club of Busabala," led by CP.  Sylvia Miwanda. Fondly known as the One Love Club, this mother club has played a vital role in nurturing and guiding the Kyadondo Technical  Institute chapter from its early beginnings. With pride and dedication, they continue to sponsor and support the club, treating it as their first-born ,a symbol of growth, mentorship, and shared purpose. Their presence is a testament to the power of unity, showing how established clubs can uplift and empower emerging ones to create lasting community impact.

As the session unfolded, something remarkable happened. The silence began to break. Students who had never spoken about their struggles found the courage to ask questions. Others nodded in quiet understanding, seeing their own stories reflected in the experiences shared.
The support of the institution played a vital role in making this day possible. The Principal, Mr. Kanaaba Deus, stood firmly behind the initiative, demonstrating the importance of leadership that values not only academic success but also the well-being of its students.

The theme of the event, “Healthy minds, successful students,” came alive in every discussion, every shared story, and every moment of connection. It was a reminder that success is not only measured by grades or achievements, but also by the strength of one’s mental and emotional well-being.
By the end of the day, the banners that read “Mental Health Awareness” symbolized more than just an event  they represented a turning point. A beginning.
Because on that day, at Kyadondo Technical Institute, conversations were started, stigma was challenged, and hope was restored and not just for those present, but for the hundreds more who joined online and carried the message forward.
And perhaps most importantly, many walked away knowing this simple truth: No one has to struggle alone.
